CHAPTER 31

The Halls’ potential new WITSEC house resembled the last location. Sedate neighborhood, nondescript exterior, a basic three-bedroom design, low key in every respect. With several important differences. It was more rural, north of the city, just off I-65, and sat at the end of a cul-de-sac. Only five other well-spaced houses in the area. The Hall’s place backed up to a cluster of rocks and trees that sloped down to an industrial area with an electronics warehouse, a plumbing supply, and a strip center with a cafe, liquor store, nail salon, and a few other enterprises. Cain and Harper had scouted the area before arriving at the Hall’s new home.

Avery had given the Halls three options: two in Nashville and one in Idaho. They had rejected Idaho out of hand and, after visiting the two local houses, leaned toward selecting this one.

Cain liked none of it. Moving only a stone’s throw from their previous place. Well within Tommy Lee Jackson’s reach. Toss in a mole in the WITSEC program, no doubt about that, and Tommy Lee would easily discover their new spot. On the positive side, he and Harper agreed this location could be more easily defended. More so than their last place, which was packed into a cozy neighborhood. Here, the nearest house sat two hundred feet away, and there was open land on either side. Only the forested area behind offered a concealed approach. With the installation of proper surveillance and with only one way for vehicles to enter and exit the cul-de-sac, the location could serve as a trap for Tommy Lee’s guys when they made their next attempt. And they would. No doubt existed there.

Bradford met them at the door and led them into the living room. Avery sat in a chair, going over a few things with the Halls as they relaxed on the couch. Kevin and Melissa had already morphed into their new identities. Melissa, who had shoulder-length brown hair before, had gone blonde. Cropped short. Kevin had neatly trimmed his shaggy brown hair and sported the beginnings of a beard. He appeared so young it seemed out of place.

“I like the new looks,” Harper said.

“I’m not sure about it yet,” Melissa said. “It’ll take a little getting used to.”

“I love having a hot new blonde wife,” Kevin said. He laughed. “Hot times.”

Melissa playfully slugged his shoulder. “You wish.”

“Good to see you’re maintaining a sense of humor,” Cain said.

“It’s not like we have a choice,” Melissa said. She looked around. “Looks like this will be our new digs.”

“You’ve decided?” Avery asked.

Melissa glanced at Kevin. “I think so.”

“We’re now William and Sarah Lewis,” Kevin said. “Nice to meet you.”

Melissa gave a head shake. “I hope I can remember that. We’ve gone from Kevin and Melissa, to Scott and Sofia Whitt in Atlanta, to Robert and Mary Sutton here in Nashville, and now someone else. It’s very confusing.”

“You’ll get used to it,” Harper said.

“For how long?” Kevin asked. “I’d be lying if I didn’t say I believe we’ll be out of here before too long.
